Of course, an easy solution for book storage could have been, well... a bookshelf. But I was looking for something that would be a space saver, that would be visible and that would allow our little girl to easily pick and pack away books on her own.
What makes these even better, are that they are easy to put up (think a quick 30 minute project) and extremely durable and affordable.
I used a 10ft (about 3meters) Amerimax vinyl K- gutter (see the close up below). They are available from Amazon, but i could only find them in bulk and for this project I only needed one. I picked it up from Home Depot for under $5. There are tons of other shapes you could choose from, but I liked the vinyl because it was easy to saw, easy to install, durable and didn't require any painting (which made this project so easy).
I cut the gutter into 3 pieces of 3ft each (about 1 meter each) with a saw. Of course you can do alternate lengths tooo, but the 3ft length fit our space perfectly and the size of the gutter I bought warranted 3 shelves and so the decision was made for me.
Use a leveler to make sure that the shelves are straight and mark the spots for drilling (both on the wall and the gutter itself). Once the holes were drilled, I mounted the shelves by screwing the gutters into the wall and voila, a little reading corner was born.
If you are looking for a cleaner look, you could finish your shelves with rain gutter caps which you can just pop onto the end of each shelf. You can pick these up for about $6 for a set of 2.
This project is frugal and incredibly easy to do (although I completely enlisted the help of hubby to do the drilling because, why not.
My favorite thing about these shelves is how easy it easy for our little to access the books. I love how she stands infront of the shelves and stares at the books, searching for the one she wants to read and then just grabs it off the shelf and away we go.
I love a great little DIY project. There is nothing better than putting your personal touch on the décor around your home, making it a unique and true reflection of what you want.
